Tapestry fragment

Warp of linen, ground of natural-colored linen of a basket weave with stripes of tapestry of violet wool with diamonds and rectangular units of violet wool. Design shows Roman influence.


Discovered by W. M. F. Petrie in the Greco-Egyptial cemetery of Hawara in the Fayûm in 1888. "The interments in this cemetery were made from 400 B.C. to 150 A.D." This piece dates from 200 B.C. to 150 A.D.
