Man looking left (52.26) and woman with wreath on head looking right (52.27). Solid cut silk velvet with design painted on warp before weaving. (Grégoire given sole right to produce velvets by this process by royal order dated 12 July 1788.)

Mlle. Niclausse (dealer), Paris; sold by Mlle. Niclausse to Adolph Loewi, Los Angeles; 1952, sold by Loewi to the MFA for $200 [see note 1]. (Accession Date: January 10, 1952) NOTES: [1] MFA accession nos. 52.26 and 52.27 were purchased together for this amount.
