Written in ink on fabric label sewn to dress: "Infant's Dress, about 1820 Benjamin Welles family, Boston."

May have been worn by Elizabeth Welles (born 1816) or her sister, Georgiana Welles (born 1818), both of Boston; Inherited by their niece and daughter, respectively, Miss Georgiana Welles Sargent (born 1858) of New York City; Gift of Emily Welles Robbins (Mrs. Harry Pelham Robbins) and the Hon. Sumner Welles, in memory of Georgiana Welles Sargent, to MFA 1949
