Infant's dress with short sheer muslin sleeves embroidered with thick threads in scolling leaf pattern, long waist, bands of five horizontal pin tucks above and below wide lace insert, open back with drawstring at neck and waist

Written in ink on fabric label sewn inside back opening: "Infant's Dress, about 1818 Benjamin Welles family, Boston."

May have been worn by Elizabeth Welles (born 1816) or her sister, Georgiana Welles (born 1818), both of Boston; Inherited by their niece and daughter, respectively, Miss Georgiana Welles Sargent (born 1858) of New York City; Gift of Emily Welles Robbins (Mrs. Harry Pelham Robbins) and the Hon. Sumner Welles, in memory of Georgiana Welles Sargent, to MFA 1949
