Unfinished whole cloth quilt with overall dense foliate pattern that radiates from a central rose; unfinished edges show two layers of linen cloth; back shows tufts of cotton stuffing

Inscription

Written on fabric label sewn to object: "Probably infant 'bearing cloth' used at christening early 18th century Stoddard family Boston. Marked 1906 Georgiana Welles Sargent descendant."

Possibly used by Mehetable Stoddard Hyslop (1719-1792) or her sisters, Mary Stoddard Chauncey (b. 1715) and Sarah Stoddard Greenough (1718-1778); Inherited by Mehetable Stoddard Hyslop's great-great-granddaughter Miss Georgiana Welles Sargent (born 1858) of New York City; Gift of Emily Welles Robbins (Mrs. Harry Pelham Robbins) and the Hon.
