Batik sample

Start collecting

Sample of cotton batik. The ground is a light neutral orange covered with tiny curved lines of darker neutral orange and dark blue. From the four corners grow curious plants, there is a bird in the center, the design is printed with dark blue and neutral orange.

Provenance

Purchased by MFA through Dr. Ananda K. Coomaraswamy for the MFA from the private collection of the Javanese prince Ario Kusumodiningrat, an elder brother of the then reigning sultan in Surakarta (Solo) on April 7, 1921
