Symbols of Liberty

Lesson Goal:  To better understand American artifacts, documents, and speeches by examining allusions to the Magna Carta within those artifacts.

This lesson fits into the larger unit “Cultural Literacy:  Allusions, Archetypes, and Symbolism.”  In this unit, students examine the following essential question: How does a modern work of fiction draw on big ideas, patterns of events, or character types from myths, traditional stories or religious works?  In this unit, students examine both works of fiction and non-fiction (historical documents, speeches) to indentify allusions and archetypes and analyze their role in the greater understanding of a text.
