MFA for Educators

Engage your students with the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to illustrate themes and concepts in any discipline.

Students will observe different ways in which artists communicate a message, whether explicitly or implicitly, via literal representation or abstraction. Teachers will facilitate discussion of an artist's decision-making process, and the various decisions to be made before, during, and after the production of an artwork - as well as how elements of spontaneity and imrovisation sometimes play into the process. Artists to be discussed include: Herb Ritts, Gordon Parks, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Jackson Pollock. Following the tour, students will create a collaborative painting on a large sheet of canvas, implementing techniques of their choosing and communicating a singular message. The final product will be a medley of different styles, to be divided and distributed amongst them all as a keepsake.
