Portrait Bust of Philippine Charlotte, Duchess of Brunswick

Marks

Painter's mark of Zeschinger. The later gilt wood stand with crowned monogram of Catherine the Great in medal relief.

Provenance

About 1758-59, probably Carl I, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (b. 1713 - d. 1780) (probably original commission) [see note 1]. November 28, 1975, anonymous sale, Christie, Manson and Woods, London, lot 132, to Edward M. Pflueger (b. 1905 - d. 1997) and Kiyi Powers Pflueger (b. 1915 - d. 2008), New York; 2006, bequest of Edward M. Pflueger and gift of Kiyi Powers Pflueger to the MFA. (Accession Date: April 26, 2006) NOTES: Carl I was Philippine Charlotte's husband and founder of the Fürstenberg Porcelain Company (1747).
