The purpose of this gallery is to introduce first graders to the importance of an image (picture). Artists use pictures to tell a story and convey meaning while writers use pictures to add meaning to their words. Students will learn the importance of drawing pictures as a pre-writing strategy.

Lesson plan for students in grade 1

The purpose of this gallery is to introduce first graders to the importance of an image (picture). Artists use pictures to tell a story and convey meaning while writers use pictures to add meaning to their words. Students will learn the importance of drawing pictures as a pre-writing strategy.

Lesson Plan 1: Generating ideas
This is an introductory lesson to Writer's Workshop in grade one. This lesson should be completed during the first six weeks of school as children are beginning to learn the routines and procedures for Writer's Workshop. Students will learn the importance of pictures (images) in their writing. Artists draw pictures to tell stories and writers draw pictures to complement their stories.

Students will practice discussing what they see by looking at images from the class gallery on the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) website. Students will be asked questions such as:
-What do you think is going on in this picture?
-What makes you say that?
-What might this be about?
-How do you think this was used?
-What more can we find?

Materials and Equipment:
• MFA online gallery may be projected using smart board. If the teacher does not have access to a computer images from the gallery can be printed out.
• Writer's Workshop materials-folders, pencils, paper, crayons

Primary Learning Goals
Students will understand that, in addition to verbal and written communication, illustrations are another way to share their thoughts with others. Students will learn the importance of detailed drawing as a pre-writing strategy before they write their words. The expression a "picture is worth a thousand words" will be discussed.

Learning Activities
• Students will share their ideas about what they notice in the selected images from the gallery.
• Students will choose any animal that is significant to them to draw. The animal that they draw will be the animal that they will later write a story about. Students can draw their pets or another animal that they may have seen at the zoo.
• Students will then share this animal memory with a friend.
• Students will be told to use 4 realistic colors in their drawing and that their picture should be the size of their hand. (These criteria will be shown in a picture form on the board and will already be familiar to the students)
• Students will then be told to go back to their desks and draw a picture explaining their story.
• Students will be given ten minutes to draw their pictures while teacher goes around and observes students at work.
• Students will then share their work with a different partner and/or whole class.

Composition: GENERAL STANDARD 23: Organizing Ideas in Writing Students will organize ideas in writing in a way that makes sense for their purpose.

Assessment
• Students will be assessed during the lesson based on how well they are able to communicate their ideas. Teacher will listen to the pair share and observe students when they go back to their own desks.
