NOTAN

DARK LIGHT PRINCIPLE OF DESIGN.

The predominant concept of NOTAN for the visual artist is the idea that the positive (subject) and negative (background) areas together make a whole, created through a unity of opposites.

The main tenet is that each shape in your composition—whether subject or background— is necessary to the whole.

If you make a reverse image of your painting, the design should still be strong.
