MFA for Educators

Engage your students with the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to illustrate themes and concepts in any discipline.

New Nation: The World of William Sidney Mount

This lesson is intended as a pre-visit activity for teachers to present to their students prior to attending the Long Island Museum's New Nation: The World of William Sidney Mount school program.  This lesson will introduce students to artist William Sidney Mount who will be discussed during the New Nation field trip.  When you booked this program you selected either the Art Focus (with art-making component) or the Social Studies Focus (with mapping activity).  This will provide a solid introduction for classes who will be participating in either the Social Studies or Art focused versions of the New Nation program.

This art set features artwork from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection and the Long Island Museum collection.  This lesson will introduce your students to the art of William Sidney Mount and will teach students how to look closely at art and to use art as a historical document.

This lesson and the on-site field trip are intended for students in grades 4-6 and meet New York State and national learning standards in Social Studies, Language Arts and Art.  These programs will meet the following state school standards:

State Standards for New Nation: Art Focus program: The Arts Standards 2 & 3, English Language Arts Standards 1-4, and Social Studies Standard 1.
State Standards for New Nation: Social Studies Focus program: The Arts Standard 3, English Language Arts Standards 1-4, Social Studies Standard 1, and Math, Science and Technology Standard 6.

To present this program to your students, please use an overhead projector and use the notes section of the slides to discuss various topics with your students.  We hope you enjoy this pre-visit activity and look forward to your museum visit!
