Mayan Feasting Vessels

Students will learn about the Mayan Civilization in Central America and the masterworks of their painted ceramics tradition.  Students will learn where on a world map the Mayans lived, parts of their culture and mythology, and the food and drink that was part of their everyday lives.  Students will also learn about the properties of clay and make their own Mayan styled drinking vessels during the first session.  During the second class, the dried clay vessels will be painted to tell a story about the students lives, interests, or something inspired by the Mayan examples viewed in class.  After painting their clay feasting vessels, students will write a short description of the story illustrated on the sides of their clay cups.
