Students will understand particular aspects of Mayan cosmology and become familiar with Mayan ceramic styles.
Students will be introduced to specific vocabulary, Mayan creative output, Mayan written language, ritual chocolate drinking, painting and book-making.
Students will read a portion of the Popol Vuh and discuss the meaning behind the tri-dimensional aspect of Mayan culture.
Students will understand the relationship between culture, tradition, ecology and art.
This will function as an intrduction to a larger lesson where students will select a ceramic artwork from an indigenous American (North or South or Central) culture, research, write a paper and create a ceramic piece inspired by the work they select.
