秩父順礼第二十番 岩の上別当内田定金 苔むしろ敷てもとまれ岩のうへ  玉の下も朽はてる身を 小男鹿も月に寝にこよ岩の上 寺尾村の孝子 当山ハ白河院の御建/立にして遙下に荒川/の水藍のごとく渦まきて/ながれ絶頂ハ峨々として/その風景言葉に尽しかたし/霊験の多きなかに此寺尾/村の者老たる母を川むかひの宮路と/いふ所におきて朝夕に見まひけるに或/時ふと病ひのよしを告来れバ急ぎ行ん/とこの麓の淵に来りしところ折しも/大雨なかバにて俄に水まして歩行わた/りすること叶ハずとやせん角やせんと/心あせるうち水ハ弥増りするばかり/なれバ仮令命を捨るまでも母の安/否を知らすにやハと既に渡らんとする/所へ見馴ざる童子舟に棹さして是/に乗れといへバ夢のごとくに悦びて岸/に上り御身は何処の者と聞バ我は/あの岩の上の者也汝が孝心を憐ミて/渡す也母も兼て我を信ず疾々ゆけと/いふしたに舟ハ失て跡なけれバ扠ハ観音/にましませしかと岩の上をふしをかミて/急ぎ母に見し所最早悩ミも愈けれバ/しかじかと物語れバともに利益を信仰して/一生供養をもなしけるとぞ 万亭応賀誌 *(二代広重画)*安政六年未五月(1859)

By 1911, purchased by William Sturgis Bigelow (b. 1850–d. 1926), Boston [see note 1]; 1911, gift of Bigelow to the MFA. (Accession Date: January 19, 2005) NOTES: [1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
