秩父順礼第七番 牛伏 青苔山法長寺 六道をかねてめぐりておがむべし  またのちの世をきくも牛伏 奉額 誰が罪の種やこぼれて蛇いちご 花薗左衛門督長臣某 承平の頃当郡末野の郷花薗の城主某/左衛門督の長臣某ハ放逸邪悪の者/なりしが相馬将門の謀逆に与して/天慶三年官軍に攻られて山林に/しのひしが終に死す爰に一僧/当寺の観音を携へて其辺に/兵乱を避て居たるがゆへ長臣の/骸を埋む其後平穏になりて逃/去し土民等ミなミな住家に皈るがゆへ/かの長臣の妻子も縁家に皈りて/夫の行衛を捜せしにかの僧死/たることを語れバことにかなしミその/塚に時々詣けるうち縁家の牛/犢を産ぬこの犢此妻子を/慕ふがゆへ一日かの/塚へ牽連しに/塚の前に膝/まづきて涙を/流し人語を/もつて我ハ/汝が夫なり悪心の報によつてかゝる/牛となれり何卒妻子ともに出家となりて/この観音を供養せバ必ず得脱せんと/いふより直に死せり是によつてかの妻子/即座に髪をおろして尼となり夫の悪報を/観音に祈りしかバ終に畜生を転じて/聖衆に生れしハ/ふしぎの霊/験なり 万亭応賀誌 *(二代広重画)(二代国貞画)(横川彫竹)*安政六年未五月(1859)

Provenance

By 1911, purchased by William Sturgis Bigelow (b. 1850–d. 1926), Boston [see note 1]; 1911, gift of Bigelow to the MFA. (Accession Date: January 19, 2005) NOTES: [1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
