can see Revere’s skill as a craftsman—but also shows peoples tastes at the time. There was a fascination with Asian art and culture in the 18th century as trade across the Pacific increased.- The idea for this silver punch bowl came from examples of Chinese porcelain.
The bowl itself is actually an important symbol of the antiroyalist feelings in the country at the time. It was commissioned by the Sons of Liberty (a patriotic organization that Revere was a member of)
Its purpose was to honor the 92 members of the Massachusetts house of representatives who had refused to rescind a letter they had sent throughout the colonies to protest the Townshend Acts which imposed duties on tea, paper, glass and other things being imported from England.
The incription reads:
“To the memory of the glorious 92 members of the house of representatives of the Massachusetts bay who undaunted by the insolent menaces of villiain in power, from a strict regard to conscience, and the liberties of their constituents on the 30th of june 1768 voted not to rescind”
This act (not to rescind) demonstrated the growing colonial feeling of resentment against British policies and the glorious 92 became a catchphrase that expressed the revolutionary feeling in America
*The liberty bowl is considered a national treasure that symbolized America struggle for recognition and respect. The MFA was able to purchase it because of money collected by Boston Public School children and the general public.
