MFA for Educators

Engage your students with the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to illustrate themes and concepts in any discipline.

Freedom & Expression

The goal of this lesson is to relate what the students from the Boston African American Historic branch of the National Park Service are learning in school (54th Civil War Regiment, the African Meeting House, Frederick Douglass, and the Underground Railroad) to the MFA collection. We'll be teaching them how artists go from canvas and paints to something that evokes freedom, leadership, and a sense of community or common purpose. We'll try and get the students to identify symbolic elements such as a pose, dynamic composition, or expressive color. For color, we'll touch upon saturation as another tool for expression and how to mix paint to be rich or muted in color.
