Oriental Couple in an Arbor

Group of two seated figures in Chinese costumes. Woman in green coat, orange skirt over long blue dress. Male with yellow hat, white flowered long coat over yellow pants seated on chair and stool. Flowered trellis. Flat base with flowers in relief. Kaendler model.

Marks

crossed swords with two hilts on proper left sword in underglaze blue.

Provenance

Alexandre Popoff et Cie., Paris; probably sold by Popoff to Mrs. William Platt [see note 1]; February 18-19, 1938, Platt and others sale, Parke-Bernet, New York, lot 218, to Forsyth Wickes (b. 1876 - d. 1964), New York and Newport, RI; 1965, bequest of Forsyth Wickes to the MFA. (Accession Date: December 24, 1965) NOTES: [1] In the catalogue of the 1938 Platt auction ("English and American Furniture," Parke-Bernet, New York, February 18-19, 1938, p. 44), this object, along with several other pieces of porcelain from the collection of Mrs. Platt, are said to have come from Popoff et Cie.
