Probably made for Ralph Sneyd (1723-93); after his death, by descent within Sneyd family until 1924. June 24, 1924, sold at Sneyd Heirlooms sale at Christie's, London, lot 88. April 28, 1965, sold by an anonymous owner at Christie's, London, lot 113. By 1993, Sir George Dowty; April 22, 1993, sold by Sir George Dowty at Christie's, New York, lot 48, where most probably bought by Alan and Simone Hartman, New York, NY; 2001, gift of Alan and Simone Hartman.
