Cassone (Marriage Chest)

Walnut. Long, low, on plain bracket feet. Bands of ornamental inlay, two molded panels on front & one each end richly decorated in intarsia with row of stylized flower baskets. Three panels on top, same design on two, geometric on square center one. Inlaid bowl of flowers between front panels.

Provenance

Dr. Albert Figdor (b. 1843 - d. 1927), Vienna; June 11-15, 1930, posthumous Figdor sale, Cassirer, Berlin, lot 624, sold for M 5,500 to Eugene L. Garbáty (b. 1880 - d. 1966), Schloss Alt-Döbern, Niederlausitz (Germany), New York, and East Norwalk, CT [see note 1]; 1954, sold by Garbáty to the MFA for $1000. (Accession Date: November 9, 1954) NOTES: [1] Garbáty emigrated from Berlin to New York between 1938 and 1939, bringing much of his art collection with him.
