Provenance

Made for Lionel Sackwille, 1st Duke of Dorset (1687/8 - 1765), at Knole, Kent; After his death, by descent to Arabella, wife of 3rd Duke of Dorset [see note 1]. By 1987, by descent to the Trustees of the Knole Settled Estates; May 20, 1987, sold by the Trustees of the Knole Settled Estates, at Christie's, London, lot 172, where most probably bought by Alan and Simone Hartman, New York, NY; 2001, gift of Alan and Simone Hartman. (Accession date: February 21, 2001) NOTES: [1] After the death of the 3rd Duke of Dorset in 1799, his widow, Arabella, married the Lord Whitworth, who used the Sackville Silver on his mission as Minister to France, and had it engraved with the royal arms of George III.
