One of a pair with 57.8b. Bronze, in two parts. a. bearded man stands on square molded base holds shield in left hand, supports tall basket of fruit on head with right. b. Woman similarly holds shield with right hand. Bases fit over lug on wreathed center held up by two sejant mermaids.
Camille Lelong, Paris. Acquired from Seligmann and Co. by Otto H. Kahn (b. 1867 - d. 1934), New York; 1934, to the Mogmar Art Foundation, New York [see note 1] and consigned to Duveen Brothers, New York; 1957, sold by Duveen to the MFA for $6,000 [see note 2]. (Accession Date: January 10, 1957) NOTES:  That this andiron and its companion were acquired from Seligmann is according to an inventory of the Mogmar Art Foundation (June 26, 1934) on file at the Getty Research Institute (Duveen Brothers Records, Box 472), cat. no. MAF 13C (attributed to an Italian artist of the 16th century). The Mogmar Art Foundation was a private corporation that kept parts of Kahn's art collection after his death. Pieces from the collection were stored with Duveen, New York, beginning in June, 1934.  MFA objects 57.8a and 57.8b were purchased together for this price.
