Trencher salt

One of a set of four cast trencher salts. Of oblong octagonal shape with concave sides between gadrooning and a molded base and an open oval depression for salt. Engraved PNR on the base.

Marks

Maker's mark: a crowned fleur-de-lis, two grains, RC, the dove of the Holy Ghost (Dennis, 95). Warden's Mark: 1735-1736: a crowned T (Dennis, 51). Charge Mark: 1732-1738: a crowned A (Dennis, 51). Discharge mark: for large and medium sized work, 1732-1738: a horse (Dennis, 51). Other: Guarantee mark used after 1838: a small boar's head (Tardy, p. 173); an Illegible mark. The Maker's mark is on the inner sides and the underside of the depression, the Warden's and Charge marks are on the underside of the depression, the Discharge, Guarantee, and unidentified marks are all on the bottom rim.
