Cycling through the Art of Recycling: Reusing Material, Reducing Waste

Goals:

(Overview & big concepts)

Examine how and why contemporary and historical artists use regular every-day materials and trash to create fine art. What are the differences and advantages to reusing/repurposing ordinary materials rather than buying new ones?

MFA Connections:

Linde Family Contemporary Wing (Robert Rauschenberg, Tara Donovan, El Anatsui), Art of Americas

Art-making activity:

Using recycled bottles, toilet paper rolls, and cardboard we’ll experiment to see what sorts of different plants and flowers we can create. Students will have the option of painting their creations

Pre-tour group activity:

Discussion of how much trash is produced in Boston every day, where trash goes when we throw it out, etc.

Follow-up activity:

Save one piece of trash (or a part of something, i.e. bottlecap) from each day for the next 5 days and make a sculpture of a person, plant, or animal from it.
