Engage your students with the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to illustrate themes and concepts in any discipline.

PEOPLE OF THE 20TH CENTURY (10/3 p.m. & 10/17 a.m.)

 

Class Topic:

People of the 20th Century

Goals:

(Overview & big concepts)

How have artists chosen to represent people during the 1900s? What new media have added to portraiture? What choices do artists make when painting/photographing/drawing/sculpting portraits?

MFA Connections:

Possible MFA artists/exhibitions include: Jamie Wyeth, Alex Katz, Karsh Goes Hollywood, F. Holland Day

Art-making activity:

Figure drawing with classmates as models

Pre-tour group activity:

Please bring with you to the museum that day: A portrait of yourself or your family to share with the class. We will discuss what choices the sitter and the artist/photographer made in creating the images.

Follow-up activity:

Write a personal statement! How do you understand and portray your identity to your friends and family? Do you have different personalities or facets of your identity when you’re with different people?  How would you describe yourself to a friend, family member, or someone you just met?
