MFA for Educators

Engage your students with the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to illustrate themes and concepts in any discipline.

MIXED MEDIA MASTERPIECES (1/9 p.m. & 1/16 a.m.)

Class Topic:

Mixed Media Masterpieces

Goals: (Overview & big concepts)

How do artists make use of unusual materials in their art? How do they transfor, disguise, and emphasize them?

Bring from home: multiples of a recyclable or mass-produced material (ex. straws, empty paper towel rolls, gold pencils...)

MFA Connections:

El Anatsui, Gugger Petter, Tara Donovan

Art-making activity:

Use your collected material along with materials in the studio to make a sculpture that either shows off or hides what it's made out of.

Pre-tour group activity:

Can trash become treasure? Think of something worn out, left over, or no longer useful that you or someone you know has transformed into something new.

Follow-up activity:

Bring your sculpture home. Search for a spot to display your newly created "treasure." Could you make something else to go with it?

Check out this video to hear Tara Donovan talk about her artistic process with multiples:
