Our second Distance Learning discussion will build upon our understanding of American Art and the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston through looking at the period of time between the Civil War and early 20th Century. We will discuss some, but not all of the slides included in the lesson below.
1865-1905 is considered America's Guilded Age. Following the Civil War, the United States emerged as an international powerhouse for both industrial and manufacturing power. In the Industrial Revolution began in the early 1800s, and picked up steam throughout the 19th century. This had a profound impact on how individuals in the United States lived their lives, where they lived, how they viewed the rest of the world, and how the rest of the world viewed them. This impact can be seen in artwork created during this time period through (a) who was creating art, (b) how the art was created, and (c) the subject matter.
