European Art: Enlightenment to Modernism

For our discussion with the Museum of Fine Arts, we will be examining artworks by European artists during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Because all art is a reflection of the society in which it was created, we can use these paintings as tools to aid our understanding of culture during this time period. By looking at these objects, we will learn about how the events during this time shaped the way artists perceived and represented the world around them.  Similarly, we will be learning about the impact that these artists have had upon their culture and upon the art of other cultures.  In the slide show, you will see some of the artworks we will be discussing during our session. The first and third slides have specific questions to guide your looking. Please select one of those two arworks and respond to the questions in the comments section.
