Chilkat Dancing Blanket

Start collecting

Black, white, yellow and blue Chilkat dancing blanket, worn by the Tlingit Chilkat . for various ceremonies, including the potlatch. The motif on this particular blanket is known as the "diving whale" design and is made up of abstract, geometric animals, eyes and family crests.


Probably between 1905-1914, purchased by Joseph Thoms in Vancouver, British Columbia; by descent to Mrs. Murat H. Davidson (Isabella Resor); until 1981, lent by Mrs. Davidson to the Cincinnati Museum of Natural History; 2004, by inheritance to heirs of Mrs. Murat H. Davidson; 2008, sold by heirs through Marcy Burns to the MFA. (Accession Date: September 17, 2008)
