Woman from a statue or stele

Start collecting

What remains is somewhat battered and worn. The face seems to be much more ideal than a portrait, and the date ought to be in the late Hellenistic period. It is more likely that this head came from a funerary statue or a large stele set up somewhere in the Greek world.

Provenance

1918, gift of Mr. and Mrs. William de Forest Thompson, Boston, to the MFA. (Accession Date: September 12, 1918); June 26, 2013, deaccessioned by the MFA for sale through Christie's, New York.
