Tetradrachm of Akanthos with lion attacking bull

Obverse: Lion to left on back of bull to right which he attacks, biting flank. Head of bull covered by that of lion. Dotted line between two plain lines marks off exergue in which there is a flower. Dotted circle. Reverse: Mill-sail granulated incuse.


Said to be from Hierissos, Macedonia, hoard in 1934; by 1934: with Daniel Kellad, 183 Liberty Avenue, Jersey City, New Jersey (who is said to have acquired it from Ravel in Marseilles); April 4, 1935: purchased by MFA from Daniel Kellad through Mrs. Brett for $ 110.00
