Striding lion

Start collecting

Open-mouthed lion, teeth bared, striding left. One of 120 lifesize lions that lined the Processional Way from the Ishtar Gate to the Temple of Marduk at Babylon.

Provenance

From Babylon, Processional Street. 1899: excavated by the Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft; 1931: purchased by the MFA from the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin. (Accession Date: October 8, 1931)
