Scarboid gem with grazing deer

Intaglio. Very flat scaraboid. Pierced for stringing (horiztonal). Motif oriented horizontally. A deer, facing right, bends head down to graze. Set on a ground line. Many very small scratches on seal surface.

By 1917: with Edward Perry Warren (according to J. D. Beazley, The Lewes House Collection of Ancient Gems, no. 74: Formerly in the Boulton collection [part of lot 42 in the sale catalogue], but not bought till 1917.); April 7, 1921: purchased by MFA from Edward Perry Warren for $ 30,000.00 (this figure is the total purchase price for MFA 21.1193-21.1221)
