Meroitic cup with crescents and ankh-signs

Start collecting

Drinking cup of light clay with painted decoration of red and purple on a cream slip: two bands with ankh-signs and horizontally oriented crescents. Thin walls, unworked rim, and a carination at bottom rounding down to a flat base. Very slight chips missing from rim.

Provenance

From Kerma, Meroitic cemetery, grave K22/3. 1913: excavated by the Harvard University–Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition; assigned to the MFA in the division of finds by the government of Sudan. (Accession Date: December 4, 1913)
