Horse's collar with winged sphinxes

Start collecting

Bronze horse's collar decorated with winged sphinxes. The collar is composed of two pieces, hinged at the top and designed to fit around the upper part of the horse's neck. It would have served as the anchor for the headstall, which fastened to it behind the horse's ears.

Provenance

By 1975, Mohammad Yeganeh, London (said to be from a large tomb in eastern Anatolia); 1976, sold by Yeganeh to the MFA. (Accession Date: January 14, 1976)
