The panel shows fantastic architecture on black ground. Beneath the coffered ceiling a hexastyle circular building stands on low pediment. Two peacocks perch on scrolls emerging from roof of circular building. The fresco has been executed in the ornate style.

Provenance

1901-1902: excavated by Gennaro Matrone in a room on the south side of the peristyle of the villa of the Contrada Bottaro, located a half mile south of Pompeii; ownership granted to Gennaro Matrone by the Italian government; by date unknown: with Mr. Marcillini, Naples; purchased from Mr. Marcillini by Joseph Brummer; by 1925: with Brummer Gallery, Inc., 55 East 57th Street, New York; purchased by MFA from Brummer Gallery, Inc., March 5, 1925, for $ 5,805.00 (the total price for MFA 25.44-25.47)
