Drinking cup (kantharos)

Start collecting

Roman pottery kantharos with truncated conical body and carenated base. The flat, ribbon-like handles have three grooves. Three widely separated bands of herringbone rouletting bordered by grooves decorate the body.


By the 1970s: said to have been in the C.A. collection, Geneva, formed in the 1970s; by 2000: with Jean-David Cahn AG, auction 2, Hotel Hilton Basel, Salon des Nations, Aeschengraben 31, Basel, Switzerland, June 26, lot 123; purchased at Cahn auction by Royal-Athena Galleries, 153 East 57th Street, New York, N.Y. 10022; purchased by MFA from Royal-Athena Galleries, December 13, 2000
