Cameo with bust of Apollo wreathed in laurel

Start collecting

Yellowish-brown on white on brown layered sardonyx. Cameo, mounted in modern gold setting as a pendant. Bust of Apollo, in profile to the right, wearing a laurel wreath. His hair is pulled back into a bun at the back of his neck, around which a chlamys (cloak) is fastened.


By date unknown: from the collection of the Earl of Arundel (formed in the 17th century) and later the collection of George 3rd Duke of Marlborough; by 1875: David Bromilow collection; by 1899: collection of Mrs. Jary;1899: with Christie, Manson & Woods, 8 King Street, St. James's Square, London (auction of the Marlborough Collection, June 26-29, 1899, lot 414, citing Cat.
