Bridle ornament

Start collecting

this silver horse bridle ornament is adorned with a lion's head in high repoussé relief. It is pierced with seven (originally eight or nine) holes for attachment to the leather bridle. The lion symbolizes the Meroitic deity Apedamak.


From Meroe, Pyramid Beg. N. 18 (tomb of Queen Amanikhatashan). 1921: excavated by the Harvard University–Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition; assigned to the MFA in the division of finds by the government of Sudan. (Accession date: November 16, 1986)
