Square gem with head of a Gorgon

Intaglio. Flat front. Set in tarnished brass ring. Head of a woman facing left. She has messy, curly hear with a snake coming out of the top of her head. A wing at left, as if coming out of her forehead. Her eyes are closed. A snake tied around her neck.


By date unknown: with Edward Perry Warren (according to Warren's records: Bought of Percy Christian who said it was bought eighty years ago by a gentleman (I fancied his wife's father) at "Hadrian's Bath" near Tivoli.); 1899: purchased by MFA from Edward Perry Warren for $ 32,500.00 (this is the total price for MFA 99.338-99.542)
