Amulet of a crocodile

Throughout ancient Egyptian history, people wore amulets of crocodiles as protection against actual crocodiles. These amulets were adopted by the Nubians of the Napatan and Meroitic periods. This amulet is made green faience with aspeckled black patina.


From Meroe (Beg. West) pyramid 130, room B. 1922: excavated by the Harvard University–Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition; assigned to the MFA in the division of finds by the government of Sudan.
