Young Lady in Blue

Long brown hair, white shawl, blue gown trimmed with gold. Said to be central motif of a sternboard. Polychromed wood, original paint; probably never used.

Provenance

According to M. & M. Karolik Collection of American Water Colors & Drawings (MFA Boston, 1962), cat. no. 1420: "This carving originally hung in the study of Virgil D. Parris of Paris Hill, Me., who was a member of Congress, 1839-1841, and Civilian Keeper of Naval Stores at Kittery Naval Yard, Me., about 1858-1859."
