Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), Cambridge, Mass.; 1908, by descent to his daughter, Miss N. Norton; 1958, gift from the heirs of Miss Norton's estate to Dr. J. Sydney Stillman, Middletown, R. I.[1]; 1977, gift of Dr. J. Sydney Stillman to the MFA. (Accession Date: December 14, 1977) [1] Dr. Stillman wrote in a letter dated May 1, 1974 in the Art of the Americas curatorial files: "Some months after Miss Norton had died, her niece wrote me a very nice letter in which she said that she thought it appropriate that the painting by Mr. William Stillman should belong to a member of his clan."
