Silver plaque on back of the chair is engraved "This chair was owned / and used by / GOVr JOHN HANCOCK / of Massachusetts in 1780 / Presented by Ebenr Thayer / TO / Wm B. Dinsmore / Jan. 1, 1883."

Stamped on inside of rear rail "WF."

Provenance

Owned by John Hancock, apparently during his lifetime; subsequently by Ebenezer Thayer, and in 1883 by William B. Dinsmore, through whose family it came to the Museum (Accession Date March 6, 1930)
