1802, Henry Hope (1736-1811), (the sitter on the left); 1811, by descent to his nephew, Henry Phillips Hope (about 1775-1839); 1839, by descent to his nephew, Adrian John Hope (1811-1863). V.H. Crosby [1]; Mrs. H. Hallahan; April 14, 1904, estate sale of Mrs. H. Hallahan ("being part of the collection formed by the late V. H. Crosby"), Knight, Frank & Rutley, London, lot 96 (as Adrian Hope family). By 1906, with the Blakeslee Galleries, London; 1906, sold by the Blakeslee Galleries to the MFA for $1235. (Accession Date: April 13, 1906) [1] V. H. Crosby was appointed the universal legatee of William Williams Hope (1802-1855), who was the youngest son of John Williams Hope (1757-1813). John Williams Hope was married to Henry Hope's niece and is the standing figure to the right in the painting.
