Hall chair (one of a pair)

"Hall chair" type. Carved angular backs with masks. Ship in ellipse on heavy splat. Seats carved in very low relief. Panels carved with flowers, leaves, feathers.

Inscription

Shop marks of two superimposed carved horizontal lines appear on back of splat and on corresponding underside of seat.

History of ownership: Part of the furnishings of the house built in 1842 by Theodore Lyman, Jr. (1792-1849), Heath Street, Brookline, Massachusetts; by descent in the family; 1956, gift of Mrs. Henry Lyman (Accession Date November 8, 1956)
