1795, the sitter, Colonel James Swan (1754-1831); 1831, by descent to his daughter, Hepzibah Clarke Swan (Mrs. John C,) Howard, Boston; 1833, by descent to her daughter, Hepzibah Howard Wayland (1801-1872), Providence, R.I.; 1872, by descent to her son, Howard Wayland (1840-1874), Providence; 1874, by inheritance to his widow, Ada Andrews Wayland, later, Mrs. Charles Stafford (1869-1902), Providence; 1902, by descent to Howard Wayland's cousin, Elizabeth Howard Bartol (1842-1927), Boston, the sitter's great-granddaughter; 1927, bequest of Elizabeth Howard Bartol to the MFA as part of the Swan Collection.
