Malacca cane with ivory handle, engraved silver band below handle, small eyelets with silver surrounds, and tapered shaft, with applied rubber tip;

Inscription

modern paper tag attached to cane reads: "This cane belonged to / The Rt. Rev. William Lawrence D.D. / Bishop of Massachusetts."

Provenance

Said to have been owned originally by William Lawrence (1850-1941), Episcopal bishop of Massachusetts; purchased ca, 1988 by the donor from a dealer in Beverly, Massachusetts; given to the Museum in 1997.
