Inscribed in cobalt blue script around body of object: "Richard Willimas / Mind and Save your Silver Money so that you can be a Man / Be comming / New London, Jun 9th 1798"

Provenance

early history unknown; possibly owned by a member of the Williams family of New London County, Connecticut; Christie's, Fine American Furniture . . ., (December 12, 1980), lot 428; purchased by MFA from The Stradlings, 1225 Park Avenue, New York 10018, in 1981.
